Why I Stopped Earning My Rest

Last Updated: July 2, 2025By Categories: Self-Kindness

Rest isn’t a reward you have to earn. Discover how I broke free from hustle guilt and embraced rest as a basic act of self-kindness.

The Lie I Believed for Years

For a long time, I believed rest had to be earned. I thought I needed to check enough boxes, meet every goal, and prove my productivity before I deserved to breathe.

Rest, to me, was something reserved for after I had done enough. And even then, it came with guilt.

I’d sit down, but my mind would race:
“Did I really do enough today?”
“Should I be working on something right now?”
“Everyone else seems to be doing more-maybe I’m just lazy.”

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was caught in a toxic loop: hustle, burnout, guilt, repeat.

It took a quiet breakdown and a very honest look in the mirror to see the truth.

Rest Is Not a Trophy – It’s a Need

I hit a wall one afternoon. I hadn’t slept well. I’d worked through lunch. And yet, I still pushed myself to check off more on my to-do list.

But somewhere between my third cup of coffee and my tenth browser tab, my body said, “Enough.”

And in that stillness, I realized something:

Rest is not something you earn. It’s something you need.

Like food. Like air. Like love.

That day, I stopped glorifying exhaustion and started listening to what my body and soul actually needed.

The 3 Beliefs I Had to Let Go Of

1. “Busy means valuable.”

We live in a world that applauds burnout. But busyness doesn’t always equal impact. Some of my best ideas and deepest clarity have come during rest, not rush.

2. “If I slow down, I’ll fall behind.”

Truth? I was already falling behind – behind on peace, on joy, on health. Rest restored me so I could actually show up fully.

3. “Rest is for the lazy.”

No. Rest is for the wise. For the human. For the one who knows that their worth is not in their output.

What Changed When I Gave Myself Permission to Rest

  • I became more present in my relationships.
  • I was less reactive and more peaceful in my decisions.
  • My creativity started flowing again.
  • I could finally hear my thoughts – and my faith – without the noise of constant doing.

It wasn’t magic. It was a mindset shift.
I stopped earning my rest.
I started honoring it.

Here’s How You Can Start, Too

If you’ve been caught in hustle guilt, here are a few gentle ways to begin:

 1. Schedule rest like a meeting.

Put it on your calendar. Treat it with importance.

2. Detach your worth from your productivity.

Your value doesn’t rise or fall based on how much you check off.

 3. Listen to your body without apologizing.

Tired? Rest. Rested? Move. Your body is wise – trust it.

 4. Practice saying:

“I don’t have to finish everything to deserve rest.”
“Rest is part of the work.”
“I’m allowed to slow down.”

Rest Is Resistance

In a world that says “keep going,” choosing rest is radical.

It’s how we protect our peace. It’s how we reconnect to our values. It’s how we show ourselves love without condition.

You are not a machine.
You are not your to-do list.
You are human. And humans need rest.

So breathe. Step away. Take the nap. Close the laptop. Sit in silence.

Not because you’ve earned it. But because you exist.

And that’s enough.
